trebisacce for all

Broglio: your gateway to Calabria.

There are places that are not only archaeological sites. They are thresholds. The site of Broglio, in the territory of Trebisacce, is a threshold. Among the first archaeological sites of international relevance that travelers coming from the north encounter, traveling along the Calabrian Ionian coast. Even before being a destination, it is a sign: here begins an important narrative of the prestigious history of Calabria. Broglio is not only a high ground overlooking the sea. It is a privileged observation point on the millenary history of Mediterranean relations, a place where the Bronze Age dialogues with Mycenaean routes, where Calabria reveals itself as a land of exchanges, of crossings, of contaminations. It is a cultural garrison that tells of an ancient and international Calabria, open, connected.

And yet, as often happens in our territories, the symbolic power of this place is not yet fully restored to contemporaneity. Its accessibility is limited, its enjoyment is not yet structured as an integrated experience, its capacity to generate territorial development has not been fully activated. From this awareness, the project “Trebisacce for all” is born: not a simple valorization intervention, but an idea of territory.

A project that identifies Broglio as a strategic node and transforms it into a tourist and cultural modal center, capable of connecting coast and inland areas, sea and mountain, archaeology and nature, community and visitors. Broglio thus becomes the point of arrival and departure as well as the trigger of a systemic network that connects the coastal side with the eastern side of the Pollino National Park, one of the largest natural parks in Europe. Not an abstract connection, but a concrete weave of cycle and pedestrian paths, slow itineraries, equipped trails, accessible connections.

The heart of the project is the construction of a continuous network of gentle mobility, capable of responding to three fundamental needs:

  • To valorize and make the site of Broglio, and therefore its history, more accessible to tourists, to allow full usability for people with sensory disabilities, and to allow individuals with motor disabilities to have information on actual usability and therefore clear information on the architectural barriers present.

  • To activate an integrated system of paths connecting Broglio (archaeological heritage), the historical center, the seafront, the rural areas;

  • To promote a model of sustainable mobility in which cycling and pedestrianism are not accessory elements, but the backbone of tourism development.

“Trebisacce for all” means, first of all, inclusion. It means designing accessible walkways, multi-sensory narrative panels, digital tools with QR codes, audio and video content in multiple languages, clear information on architectural barriers. It means valorizing an integrated system of the local tourist offer that brings together the various tourisms: archaeological tourism, marine tourism, rural tourism, experiential tourism, and therefore giving life to a shared tourist experience.

In this perspective, the project also assumes a strong cultural and pedagogical value: educating on sustainable mobility means educating on a new way of inhabiting places. Walking and cycling are not just modes of displacement, but practices of knowledge. They give time back to the gaze, depth to the experience, value to relationships.

“Trebisacce for all” is therefore a project of light infrastructure and cultural infrastructure. Light because it privileges paths, connections, smart signage, digital tools, sustainable equipment. Cultural because it builds a coherent narrative of the territory, networking archaeology, landscape, community, and innovation.

Trebisacce For All is not just a valorization project. It is a declaration of vision, an example of how an archaeological site can become an engine of territorial cohesion.
