Pontile

In the fishermen’s district, the past is not a distant memory: it is a presence that continues to move among the moored boats and the nets laid out to dry. The low houses, overlooking the sea, tell a story made of early awakenings before dawn, of hands worn by salt, of glances that learn to read the sky even before books.

For generations, here the sea has been work and destiny. The fishermen would go out when the city was still asleep, entrusting their day to the current, to the wind, to the silent knowledge of the waters. It was not just a job: it was a culture. Nets were repaired together, decisions were made together, the return was a shared moment. One went to sea with the awareness that mutual trust was not an abstract value, but a concrete necessity.

The pier that extends out over the Ionian Sea is the symbolic line of this history. It is the point from which one departs and to which one returns. Walking on it means ideally retracing the trajectories of those who have sailed these waters for years. The horizon, seen from there, is not only beauty: it is measure, responsibility, memory.

And yet, this is not just a tale of the past. Even today, small boats go out to fish. Not with the numbers and rhythms of the past, but with the same determination. The lights that move away early in the morning, the sound of the engine breaking the silence, the return with the fresh catch: these are signs of a living continuity. The village has not become a museum of itself. It is a place that resists by transforming itself.

The Mediterranean, in this Ionian stretch, continues to be a traveling companion. It has known landings, encounters, different cultures. And it continues to offer, to those who inhabit it with respect, the possibility of living off it without losing their identity.

In the fishermen’s district, the sea is not a background. It is a daily presence. It is fatigue and pride. It is memory that renews itself every time a boat leaves the pier and returns with the sign of the work accomplished.
