Annunziata Gate

Crossing the Porta dell’Annunziata means crossing a threshold that is not only architectural, but narrative. It is the only intact gate remaining from the ancient defensive system: a precise, clear sign that identifies the historical center of Trebisacce. Built in the 16th century, it was the access towards the sea. From here passed fishermen and merchants, men and goods, stories and relations. It was a daily, necessary point of transit. Today it is a point of storytelling.

The staircase that opens beyond the gate performs a powerful urban gesture: it climbs up towards the ancient village and descends towards the new city, ideally reaching out towards the sea. It is a vertical line that connects different times. The stones, worn by footsteps, seem to freeze time rather than measure it. Walking here means feeling under your feet the stratification of centuries.

The recent restoration has not transformed the Gate into an isolated monument, but has restored its dignity, legibility, presence. It has remained fragile, like all ancient things, but precisely for this reason, very strong in its symbolic value. It no longer separates inside and outside. It unites. It connects historical Trebisacce to contemporary Trebisacce, the gathered village to the city open towards the Ionian Sea.

In this passage, one understands the value of walking as a cultural act. Crossing a gate means choosing to enter into a history. The Porta dell’Annunziata is not just a physical passageway: it is an invitation. It is memory that becomes a path; it is the historical center that does not close itself off but dialogues with the present.

Here, the urban landscape becomes an experience. Every step, every stone, every shadow tells that identity is not an abstract idea. It is a continuous journey between past and future.
